Title: Professor of Biology
Description: Mathematical Ecology, Conservation, and Biostatistics
Research Interests: I am interested in complex questions in landscape and community ecology, conservation, and applied biostatistics. One area of my work concentrates on fundamental questions in mathematical ecology e.g. population dynamics, scaling, global climate change, and biodiversity. A second area of my work addresses more applied questions about monitoring and management of species, communities, and ecosystems motivated by the Endangered Species Act and regional conservation plans developed under the federal HCP and the California NCCP programs.
Education: BA in Biology and Environmental Studies (1984) University of Pennsylvania; MS in Ecology (1990) Bowling Green State University; MS in Statistics (1990) University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada; PhD in Mathematical Ecology (1996) Cornell University.
Professional Experience: Faculty member of the Ecology Program of the Department of Biology (1997-present). Current lab composition includes 1 postdoctoral student, 6 MS students, and 1 staff scientist as well as several undergraduate interns and volunteers. Advised 4 PhD students and 18 MS students. Taught Biol 215 (biostatistics), 535 (plant ecology), 597A (univariate biostatistics), 606 (advanced biostatistics), and 745 (theory and principles of ecology II).
